According to a report leaked to the AP, the US military will begin training women for combat roles by 2015. The Army will develop standards by July 2015 to allow women to train and potentially serve as Rangers, and qualified women could begin training as Navy SEALS by March 2016 if senior leaders agree.
The Supreme Court ruled Monday against an Arizona ballot measure requiring new voters to present proof of citizenship before being added to the voting rolls. The justices ruled, 7-2, that Arizona’s effort to establish proof-of-citizenship requirements for new voters ran afoul of the so-called “motor voter” law Congress passed in 1993.
President Obama says the case of Edward Snowden, the government contract worker who leaked documents about two secret data gathering programs, had been referred to the Department of Justice for “criminal investigation” and Snowden’s “possible extradition.”
On Monday a jury found former Ald. Ambrosio Medrano guilty of taking bribes. Medrano became the first to be convicted twice in two separate cases. He could face as much as five years in jail.
NASA has eight new astronauts — its first new batch in four years. Four of the eight are women, the highest percentage of female astronaut candidates ever selected by NASA.
