About Big John Howell

John came to Chicago over 20 years ago and has been heard on WUSN-FM, WJMK-FM, and WCKG-FM. He’s also hosted the nationally syndicated Country Gold, a live call-in request show heard across the country via the Westwood One Radio Network from 1999-2006. Originally a native of Holland Michigan, John graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston (1982) and traveled the United States as a trumpet/ trombonist and music director/arranger with a variety of groups and shows from 1982-1983. He began radio career at WZND in Zeeland, Michigan, and spent time in Grand Rapids at WLAV, WJFM and WGRD.

In 1988, John moved to Chicago join WCKG. For 17 years, John Howell was known as “Big” John Howell to his listeners at Chicago’s country station US99. John became one of the city’s most recognizable radio voices as he built one of Chicago’s most popular morning shows. John understands and shares the values that Chicago listeners believe in. Off the mic, he is the father of an 11 year-old son.
